Evening Prayer Before Bed

These prayer services, all using the format from day 1, helped pilgrims prepare themselves for the Great Silence (no speaking) which began after the end of the service and continued until after breakfast each morning. They could be used by individuals or groups who want to end the day with prayer and reflection.

Daily theme 1: Coming to God

• Centering Prayer (deep breathing, letting go, clearing space, inviting God into the space, expressing your heart to God, listening to the Spirit)

• Scripture Reading: Psalm 42 (Let the words of Scripture wash over you. Let the Holy Spirit speak to you and lead you, as you absorb, reflect, and pray.)

Ask yourself, “What is the longing of my heart?”

• Reflection in Silence

• Scripture Reading: Matthew 11:28-30

Ask yourself, “What am I seeking in my relationship with God?”

• Reflection in Silence

• Scripture Reading: Ephesians 3:14-21

Ask yourself, “What is the Spirit saying to me?”

• Reflection in Silence

• Spontaneous prayers spoken out loud

Daily theme 2: Seeking God

Scriptural readings: Psalm 27; John 15:1-11; Hebrews 11:1, 6, 8-16

Daily theme 3: Knowing, Loving and Serving God, the Father (Parent)
